Reading and Responding to Gloria Anzaldua's "How To Tame a Wild Tongue"
Please read Gloria Anzaldua’s essay "How To Tame a Wild Tongue," which you will find in our course packet. After reading the essay, please write a two page Response Essay. In a Response Essay, you develop one of your own thoughts in reaction to what you have read. Your response may focus on how your own experiences relate or do not relate to the essay, what you liked or disliked about either the content of the essay or the style in which it was written, what you felt the author’s overall argument was in the essay, or what connections--either to other texts or important events--the essay made you consider.
We have now reached mid-semester and your experience as a writer of academic papers has increased. As a result, my expectations for your reading response essays have also increased. Please use paragraphs in this essay and try your best to make this piece a focused discussion of Anzaldua’s essay that explores one particular approach to interpretation: a personal response, a consideration of the unique style in which the essay is written, a discussion of what the essay is “really” about, etc. We will be discussing Anzaldua’s essay and your response essays and any and all questions you have about either during our next class.
As always, make sure that the essay is in MLA format, meaning you will use a 12-point font, and the essay will be double spaced with one inch margins. Please also read over your essay at least once before handing it in to make sure that your audience can clearly and easily comprehend the points you are making.
